The Moment I Realized I've Been Building Communities All Along

Not long ago, I was considering a nonprofit leadership opportunity that, on paper, was a natural fit.

I kept coming back to the opportunity, wondering why it resonated so deeply. As I was talking it through with a friend, they asked what inspired me most about it.

My answer surprised me.

I didn't talk about fundraising.

I didn't talk about campaigns or major gifts.

Instead, I said, "I see an opportunity to build a community that people genuinely want to be part of."

I thought about that answer for the rest of the day. Why was that the first thing that came to mind?

After all, I've spent more than twenty-five years helping organizations inspire transformational philanthropy. Along the way, I've had the privilege of partnering with remarkable nonprofit leaders, world-renowned surgeons, professional and collegiate coaches, generous philanthropists, and dedicated volunteers. Together, we've inspired transformational gifts and advanced missions that truly matter.

So why, when someone asked what inspired me most about this opportunity, wasn't my first thought fundraising?

The answer became clear.

I've always been inspired by the moments that happen long before a gift is made.

The alumni who still show up to cheer for the university they call home because the game is only part of what brings them back.

The families who find one another while navigating the uncertain journey of cancer.

The parents who willingly make sacrifices because they believe every child deserves access to an exceptional education.

Those are the moments that build community.

Those are the moments where transformational philanthropy begins.

The organizations that inspire extraordinary generosity do more than advance a mission.

They create opportunities for people who share the same values to find one another.

Over time, those connections become relationships.

Those relationships become communities.

And communities accomplish things together that no individual donor ever could.

I've finally put words to something that's been shaping my work for more than twenty-five years.
